#HOM Community Class w/Paolo Aragona This Friday 6/20

#HOM Community Class w/Paolo Aragona This Friday 6/20

Good morning everyone! Meet Paolo Aragona! Paolo will be teaching THIS FRIDAY'S 6/20 Community Class at House of Movement!

Friday Line Up @ House of Movement
Pearl Studios 500 8th Ave 4th Floor Room 401 - $13 per class
7PM Beginner HipHop w/ Kristian Nacional
830PM Community Class w/ Paolo Aragona

What do you get when you mix grainy VHS-recorded music videos, a Michael Jackson’s greatest hits cassette tape, hours of watching dance videos on a 56k dial-up connection, and a combination of curiosity and no shame? The origin story of Paolo’s sultry love affair with dance.

From emulating MJ as a child in his hometown of Baguio City, Philippines, to the start of his freestyle foundation in popping, locking, and bboying in high school in the Philly suburbs, to today— Paolo’s movement vocabulary is always evolving. While attending college in Philly, Paolo frequented freestyle jams, trained at Koresh Dance and the Funky Sole Fundamentals, and experimented with jazz, modern, ballroom, and latin at the University of the Arts and University of Pennsylvania. Shortly after graduating, Paolo moved to NYC and has since trained at Broadway Dance Center, Monsters of HipHop, and industry and community workshops in the tri-state area.

A proud member and alum of the east coast dance community— Paolo is no stranger to the stage. He is a former director and alum of iNERT!A Dance Team at the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia, an alum of UPenn’s Strictly Funk Dance Company, an alum of E.P.I.C. Motion Dance Company, and currently a dancer for Funkanometry NY. Some notable performance highlights include, The Filipino Channel’s One Kapamilya Go 2014 Concert at the Prudential Center, the choreography round of the So You Think You Can Dance Season 7 NYC Auditions, Funkanometry SF’s The Sock Hop 6 Showcase, Culture Shock DC’s International Choreographer’s Showcase, and World of Dance NY 2013.

Advertising copywriter by day, dancer by night (that sounds saucy…) — Paolo is absolutely thrilled to share his imagination and groove with his fellow movers!

Community Class Spotlight: Kenichi Kasamatsu

On our new blog segment here at House of Movement, each month we will be highlighting a Community Class instructor! This month we will be learning more about Kenichi Kasamatsu, or Ken as he likes to be called.

We at House of Movement have had the privilege of working with Ken back in January of this year when we first had him on board to teach a Community Class - Click HERE in case you missed it! Our aim for our Friday Night Community Classes is to feature a choreographer from our community to come in and teach. We want our students to learn about the different styles and choreographers that are coming up in our community and we want to give choreographers the space to be able to expand their reach to who they can share their work with.

Ken's style of choreography is subtle yet powerful. He connects with the music seamlessly and pushes his students to engage themselves when it comes to understanding his flow. He makes his students feel comfortable in class while at the same time challenges them to use their bodies in new ways. Most of all, Ken's class was a blast and everyone had a great time learning from him.

Ken will be teaching another Community Class next FRIDAY 3/28 - FACEBOOK EVENT PAGE - here at House of Movement! Make sure to follow us and stay connected on our social media outlets to learn more about our mission to share and grow in this community.

Kenichi Kasamsatsu Community Class at House of Movement. January 17, 2014

Kenichi Kasamatsu Biography:

It will always be an unresolved matter when one asks where Kenichi, or Ken as most call him, is from. Despite the fact that he was born in Malaysia and he is a half of Japanese and Malaysian, Ken spent most of his years in Thailand which is where he started dancing as well. It is safe to say though that his biggest inspirations came from else where, keeping Ken stuck on YouTube to witness the various artists that he found mesmerizing.

Only recently did Ken take the leap forward coming to the states in order to share his craft and learn more on this path, April of this year to be exact, and in just a short amount of time has gotten him opportunities to be a featured dancer in various live stages as well as assisting positions for choreographers such as Gigi Torres and Neil Schwartz, his most recent work also includes being a guest judge and teaching a workshop at PUSO's SAYAW 2014 at Stony Brook University. Some may also recall that he was at the mL tour D.C. Season 2 and 3 winning awards both times. Ken's style is unique to be sure and the best word to describe such would be "subtle" yet filled with details, close to what a lot refer to now as Urban. We would like to leave you with a sentence that Ken will be sure to get you saying, "Everyone has the freedom to live, and I live for the freedom to dance".
