#HOM Community Class w/Antony Chu Tonight!

Hey everyone! Tonight is our Community Class w/ Antony Chu or EPIC Motion Dance Company! 500 8th Ave 4th Floor (Between 35th and 36th Streets) - $13 Check out Antony's HOM321 and we'll see you there!

- What were the 3 most pivotal moments in your dance career (explain)?

1. Moving to New York:
Moving to New York really opened my eyes to dance as an art form. There is so much talent and diversity in the community here, and seeing that definitely pushed me to train harder and open myself to different things. I remember one of the first shows I watched when I came here was "Instinct" from Rhapsody James's Motivating Excellence program. That show blew my mind. To this day, it remains as one of the most inspiring moments I've experienced in dance.

Moving to New York also opened a lot of doors for me. From Synchronic, HipTop, IFA Dance Team, Funkanometry NY to EPIC Motion, all these teams that I've danced with have not only given me a diverse range of training but also an incredibly supportive network. My closest friends today are not surprisingly people I've met through dance, and I am forever grateful to the New York dance community for them.

2. Moving to Paris:
In 2013, I went to Paris for study abroad. I was initially worried that I wouldn't get to dance when I was there, but I was pleasantly surprised when I discovered the vibrant dance scene in Paris. I got to experience some very different styles, meet some incredibly talented dancers, and also got to participate in a few dance video shoots while I was there. The highlight of my whole trip, however, was definitely booking Oryane Wilson's music video.

3. Trip to LA:
Last summer, I took a solo trip to LA to train for a month. 3-4 classes everyday, sometimes 5, sometimes back-to-back. The trip was so worth it, and I would definitely recommend other dancers to do the same if they had the opportunity to. Instead of just going on holiday, take a dance trip and dedicate a month (or more) just to train. Your body will thank you!

- How would you describe your style of choreography in 2 words (explain)?

Groovy and 'Feel-good'
A lot of my dancing is based on grooves and what comes from your core and body. I like to move in a way that makes sense and in a way that 'feels good' to my body, and I hope it'll feel good for your's too!

- What is 1 piece of advice you would like to give to students who will be taking you class?

Be open-minded and have fun!
I like to play with different styles, so sometimes what I do may come as a surprise to people. But just remember that everything I do is based on the idea that it should feel good on the body. So just stay open-minded, groove out, and have fun!

(1) What were the 3 most pivotal moments in your dance career (explain)?
1. When I started dancing at the Boys & Girls Club.

Every morning I wasted 2-5 solid minutes debating whether I wanted to stay in the art room or make my way to the dance studio; and every morning I made the same decision- the dance studio. It holds such a special place in my heart bc thats where it all started. Thats where I found the realest love.

2. When I went inactive for a season.

The worst and heaviest withdrawal I had all year. It was worse than a break up. I wasn't able to take class as much either. Thats when I knew dancing is something I could never give up. I love it too much. All i know is, I'll be 80 and I'll still be grooving.

3. Teaching for HOM.

It's my first time teaching alone for the dance community. I'm super nervous but also very excited to share what I love with everyone. Thank you HOM!

(2) How would you describe your style of choreography in 2 words (explain)? Groovy? Smooth? I don't really know haha

(3) What is 1 piece of advice you would like to give to students who will be taking you class? Have fun and make it your own. Some parts won't make sense when I teach but I promise it'll make sense with the music!

BONUS: Tell us any fun fact you’d like us to know about yourself! (optional) I hate cheese but I LOVE pizza

#HOM Community Class Tonight w/Adrian Causing

Tonight we have Adrian Adrian Causing teaching for Community Class! 830pm @ Pearl Studios NYC 500 8th Ave 4th Floor Room 401 - $13

Check out his HOM321!

What were the 3 most pivotal moments in your dance career (explain)? — 1. Starting FR3SH / 2. Performing at the first Sockhop in San Francisco / 3. Being on ABDC

How would you describe your style of choreography in 2 words (explain)? —— I don’t claim myself as a “Hip Hop” choreographer. I just like what I like and do what I do. I’d like to think I’m eclectic, but if you want to put me a box, I’d say “Jazz Funk.” LOL.

What is 1 piece of advice you would like to give to students who will be taking you class? — Pay attention and learn with your eyes and body, not with your mouth.

BONUS: Tell us any fun fact you’d like us to know about yourself! (optional) — There may or may not be plans for a “FR3SH” reunion of some sort. We’ll see… *Evil Grin*

#HOM Community Class w/Ryan Zeng This Friday 10/24

Hey everyone! Check out Ryan's HOM321 and make sure to check out his Community Class tomorrow night at 830PM (Pearl Studios 500 8th Ave 4th Floor Room 401)

1. What were the 3 most pivotal moments in your dance career (explain)?

The 3 most pivotal moments of my dance career would have to be ... Training under the direction of Jake Pesquira, Auditioning for Project D Dance Company, Flying to LA for summer training....
After being in Unique Movement for about two years , I felt that it was time to go off on my own to train and find myself as a dancer and as an individual. During this time, I was in contact with Jake Pesquira from Rhythm City. He recommended his intensive program for the body and the mind called "D.A.N.C.E for your LIFE ". Under the direction of Jake, I was able to develop self-confidence, self-awareness , and understanding the positive effects of dancing. To sum up the training, it was a life changing experience and I continue to use what I've learned to shape the dancer I strive to be.
Auditioning for Project D Dance Company was one of the best decisions of my life. I remember messing up during my first try but was called back to perform the choreography again. The nervous feeling and the thought of messing up again was on my mind but my brother Hendrick Ramos ( another good of mine who was auditioning ) said " You got this bro... Show them why you deserve that spot ". The moment continues to remind me to always work hard for what I want in life.
After a season on Project D Dance Company, I decided to travel with a group of friends to LA for summer training. Seeing the community over there was an eye opener. Watching dancers push to their limits in class and observing the quality of movement was inspiring. Last but not least.. getting the chance to take class from one of my biggest inspirations and the guy who started it all for me... MIKE SONG! If you guys ever get the chance to, take his class. I guarantee that it's always going to be a great class!

2. How would you describe your style of choreography in 2 words (explain)?

Visually inspiring; Whenever I listen to a song, I tend to think about a moment in my past or I think about a life experience. I play out that moment in time when I freestyle and hopefully help others understand as I turn the freestyle into choreography.

3. What is 1 piece of advice you would like to give to students who will be taking you class?

Have fun

BONUS: Tell us any fun fact you’d like us to know about yourself!
I'm a huge fan of POKEMON!

#HOM Community Class w/Regina Lustre of Project D Tomorrow 9/19!

Tomorrow! We will be having Regina Lustre of Project D Dance Company teaching for Community Class at House of Movement!

Pearl Studios 500 8th Ave 4th Floor Room 401 - $13 per class
Friday Night Line Up
7PM ADV Beginner Class w/ Kristian Nacional
830PM Community Class w/ Regina Lustre

Check out Regina's HOM321
What are the 3 most pivotal moments of your dance career and why?

1.) Joining Project D in 2008. I never would have started dancing or have grown a passion for dance if it weren't for these unique and silly people whom I love.

2.) Being recognized and being chosen as select by Chris Martin in the So You Think You Can Sayaw workshops in 2013. Chris Martin has always been one of the greatest dancers in my eyes, and being chosen as select for his piece to 'Let's Just Be' honestly gave me the determination to get better. I never felt so honored.

3.) (as lame as this sounds) Dating Eric Delgado lool. He is someone who pushes me as a dancer because he knows I could always do better. We take classes together and all we do is critique each other and help each other grow. I wouldn't be where I am today if it wasn't for his guidance and support. Dancer boyfriends are OP.

-----

How would you describe your style of choreography in 2 words. Explain.

I'd say my style of choreography is fun and textures. Dancing is fun!!!! I try to make my pieces as enjoyable as possible, for me as well as those who watch or learn. I love grooves, spins, and jumping around. Im a kid, what can I say? Haha. OH and I'm a big big big fan of textures. Ugh. I'd marry textures if I could. I try to incorporate different feelings into each move whether it be hard hitting, smooth, dime stopping, whatever. I love textures.

-----

What is 1 piece of advice you'd like to give to students at House of Movement.

One piece of advice I'd say is to never take a class or a day in the dance world for granted. You never know WHEN you'll get inspired, WHO will motivate you, WHERE you'll have pivotal points, and WHAT will cause your epiphany. There are also many times when you might have to stop dancing completely because of reasons, and then you'll look back and be like, 'golly, I should have learned more from so-and-so' or 'dang flabbit, I should have killed this choreo'. Never take anything for granted. Treat every day like you'd never regret it.
