Meet Simon Huang! Simon has been dancing with us since the very beginnings of House of Movement and it has been a pleasure seeing him train and explore movement with us. We are also lucky enough to have Simon part of our team as an Operations Intern. Learn below what has inspired Simon to dance and grow with House of Movement.
How long have you been dancing?
I have been dancing on and off for almost 6 years now. Before college, I first learned how to cwalk by watching youtube tutorials. During my college years I started to pick up popping and hip hop choreography. I first joined Team Anonymous and later on joined TYS which were both at Stony Brook University. Through these teams I learned more about choreography and performance, which I am grateful about to this day. After Stony Brook I joined Asian American Dance Troupe at Harvard University and cleaned up my movements and performance aspects. Besides taking classes at HOM, I’m currently in AnoNYmous which has been pushing me in terms of choreography and freestyle. It has come full circle!
How long have you been taking classes at House of Movement?
It’s been around 2 years since I first started dancing at House of Movement. I began during the summer before I started graduate school at Harvard University. I went nearly every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday! After I graduated I began coming back and I even intern on Fridays :).
What is your favorite class at House of Movement? Why?
Oh I have to be careful with this question because of my internship here haha. My favorite HOM classes were with Kristian Nacional, who moved a couple months ago to California to pursue dance. I loved his energy, choreographies, and passion for dance. As for community classes, I really enjoyed Alice Wu’s class. Her class emphasized not just performing but releasing your emotions and letting your movements do the talking.
What is one of your fondest memories of taking class at House of Movement?
My fondest memory was taking my first HOM class after I graduated from graduate school. It was Kristian’s class and he was teaching a couple’s choreography to Sweater Weather with his friend (I forgot her name, sorry!). Since I haven’t taken HOM classes in forever it was a struggle but I enjoyed the unique choreography. When we take classes, you hardly ever dance with another person. You have to learn how to merge with that person and complement their movements, which is a challenge that isn’t taught very often in hip hop classes. Besides that, I really liked the choreography :)
How has House of Movement class improved your skills as a dancer?
House of Movement definitely helped with my musicality, choreography retention, performance aspects, and confidence in general. I used to be afraid to volunteer for groups but now I pretty much go up every time (*cough* unless it’s select community classes *cough*). After taking this many classes you learn more about your own body movements and how to listen to the music, which helps with retention and confidence. Also, you adapt to how each choreographer teaches, how they hear the music, and their arsenal of moves.
